The storied fountain in Fountain Hills was at one time the biggest fountain, spraying water up to 560 feet in the air. The fountain is currently the third largest fountain in the world and came to be as a way to attract prospective residents to the community which was developed on the grounds of a cattle ranch in the 1970’s.

At about 7500ft in elevation the Mogollon Rim is definitely part of the high desert here in Arizona. As when you arrive the differences between the rim and the lower desert are obvious. The temperatures are cooler cactus has given way to pine trees and you can even find snow on the ground [I saw some on my drive through the area when coming back from Wisconsin on August 8th]. When I talk about getting up and out of the valley this is what I mean.

Fire and Rain

Headed toward Wisconsin on a roadtrip to see friends and family I had planned to try and avoid severe weather [a storm chaser I am not] to keep on schedule and avoid damage to my car or me. This single cloud burst outside of Holbrook Arizona, however, seemed quite distant and pretty tame and while I really wanted to get to my destination quickly I took some time shooting it in hopes of getting a decent shot of the concentrated rain with the sunset behind it. I didn’t get to my hotel until 130am the next morning but I counted the time as well spent.

The Road

Hey folks. I’m sorry if you’ve been wondering where I’ve been or where the posts have gone. I took some vacation time for my Dad’s birthday and have managed to see as many friends and family on the way that I could [pics from that to come]. I’m now back….for 1 day and then hit the road again, but I plan on getting back on schedule next week. It’s been quite the week with big swings of ups and downs so I thank you for your patience!

The Sandy Veil

This is the backside of the storm that rolled through Phoenix on Monday. After the wall of sand comes through and the sky goes dark, the first hint of resolution is sun attempting to push its’ way through the mass of dirt and sand to settle on the land again. The initial light is diffused amongst millions if not billions of particles of sand providing an ethereal color and glow that is far easier to experience than to describe.

Wall of Sand

Monsoon season has arrived! We’ve had multiple storms roll through the area and while I was busy on Sunday and didn’t have a chance to get out I made up for it by driving down to Maricopa yesterday to catch this Dust Storm/Haboob as it rolled over the fields. The biggest danger from these storms becomes visibility on the highway. You can see how quickly visibility drops. A secondary issues can come in the form of Valley Fever which is caused by a fungus that grows in the dry soil of the southwest and can be picked up and transported with the moving sand.

Wilderness Edge

Landscape photography can be a lot of guesswork. This photo is the result of a trip up to the rim in the hopes of catching the twilight hour on the Mogollon Rim with the launch of a SpaceX rocket as the primary subject. The weather and timing of the launch worked out well, the visibility of the rocket did not. The time, as always, was not wasted as it was a beautiful evening on the rim.

Dixie Mountain Saddle

I wasn’t planning to do much of a hike this day. I was looking for some owls I had seen on another photographers IG feed and ended up part way up the Dixie Mountain trail. The trail continues around the mountain past this saddle and is a hike I’d definitely like to finish some day when it’s not over 100 degrees outside.

I struggle with location scouting, not because I don’t know what it is I’m looking for….but because once I see a decent view I have a hard time leaving to go check out other views that might or might not be better. When I reached this vista at the top of Schnebly Hill Road I fell into my usual bad habit and thus I sat here for about five hours before packing up. It wasn’t all bad though. The world of a busy inter-city trauma center is a dictionary definition of overstimulation and to sit on the side of a mountain for a few hours hearing nothing but the wind is fine by me.

The Haven Fire

The Hazen fire started on May 2nd in the rugged and dense terrain of the Gila River Bottom. This same terrain has made the task of fighting the fire difficult. Driving to work not he 2nd I could see the large loom up from my apartment almost 40 miles away. Aggressive work on the ground and from the air has been successful and current containment is listed as 78%.

A Sky Full of Gold

The Lemmon Rock Lookout Tower was originally erected in 1913 with the current iteration being built in 1928. Sitting at over 8700 feet in elevation it is the oldest lookout tower in the Coronado National Forest and is still active today. For over a century the tower has stood watch over the forest and the expanding city of Tucson.
