I wish I could say I tracked this deer over miles, or sat patiently for hours to get this one shot. The truth of the matter is I was walking the path back from Lockett Meadow, not particularly paying much attention, when this deer jumped the path 15 feet in front of me with 3 other deer. They hung around just long enough for me to get my camera up and then took off again. There have been times where detailed planning or hours of patience have paid off for me. This was just dumb luck.

The Meadow

I drove up to Lockett Meadow the other day. I wanted to get my new wheels out on the road for some highway miles and also wanted to capture the fall color of the high countryt while there was time. You used to be able to drive up to the meadow but road work over the past few years means a 6 mile round trip hike just to get to the meadow and back. I mistimed my trip and as such didn’t get the image I was planning on, which turned out in my favor. By being a little late, moving locations and hanging around until just after the sun went behind the mountain I was able to capture what I feel is a much more interesting photo than I had planned. The day was amazing, the sun was bright, the temperatures were crisp and I returned home refreshed, renewed and ready for the next adventure.

Level Up

After spending a few years looking into upgrading my wheels to something that would offer more off-road capability I finally pulled through trigger. Last Thursday I took delivery of a new 4Runner and am looking forward to building my off road confidence to levels that will allow me to seek out new adventures with friends and photographic opportunities.

I went hunting a few weeks ago. Ok, I tagged along with my friend who was going hunting and had asked if I wanted to go and who, I’m sure, quickly regretted his decision as I’m not as light of foot as I like to think I am and I have no doubt the deer heard me coming from miles away. Disappointing for him as he didn’t get to nock even one arrow and for me as I thought maybe I could get some shots of deer stepping through the morning fog or sipping from a creek. Despite this it was a beautiful morning spent in nature with a good friend. We found this tree along the edge of a ridgeline seeming to guard over the valleys and hills that stretched before it.

The Ranch

I tried to catch a fast moving storm coming through the area but my original idea to shoot out at the Superstitions was thwarted when the storm, moving east to west, beat me to the mountains. I then diverted a bit to the south to stay out of the direct path so I could shoot outside of the wind, driving rain and lightning. I ended up back at Morrison Ranch where the lighting strikes were few but the sunset bouncing off the storm clouds saved the day.

I wouldn’t say this guy seemed overly excited to have his photo taken at 7am. The zoo was pretty sparse at that time and I was alone when I walked up to his enclosure. Once he saw me this was pretty much what I got until I (slowly) backed out, offering silent thanks for the reinforced glass between us.

After months of searching we have finally found our monsoon season here in Arizona. In the past week we’ve had multiple nights of rain and thunderstorms. On Thursday I was home when a dust storm turned into a thunderstorm so quickly I wasn’t able to get out fast enough to provide a compelling foreground so you’ll have to accept this shot from my balcony. This is a multi-frame blend all of which was shot over the course of about 15 minutes.

Sunset Low

It was a busy travel weekend for me [yes, I know I missed all the amazing lightning around here] and Midwest storms did not make the return trip easy. As such I’m a day late and using another image from my last shoot to post for the week. While the subject matter is the same the image, taken from almost the same spot as last week, is a good example of adjusting your shooting position from the norm. We are so used to viewing the world from our standing height that photos shot from that position don’t tend to be all that engaging. For this shot I was laying in the grass shooting up at the silos. This not only provided a unique perspective but eliminated the background elements from the last photo so the focus is solely on the grass, the silos and the sky.

Morrison Ranch

The history of the Morrison family in Arizona dates back to the 1920’s. Three decades later they erected the now iconic silos which originally were used to store grain for the family’s 13000 dairy cows. In later years the farm land was converted into a residential community but the silo’s still stand, serving as a visual anchor for homes nearby and a reminder of the agricultural origins of the area.

Peace and Fury

At approximately 5pm on July 4th a single lightning strike ignited the Dragon Bravo Fire amongst acres and acres of dry and brittle forest in Grand Canyon National Park. Initially limited to 10 acres strong winds on July 11th pushed the fire outside the initial containment area and it spread to 1500 acres. On July 13th park officials confirmed the loss of the Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim. As of August 1st the fire had grown to 112,000 acres with just 10% containment.

A couple years ago I went down to the sunflower field outside of Maricopa, Arizona. It was a great place for photos, getting out of the city and (as the sun went down) for getting eaten alive by mosquitos. I attempted to go last year with a friend but either our timing was way off or they hadn’t planted sunflowers that year. This year they had and I was lucky to not only get down there but get there while the sunflowers were still vibrant and tall as opposed to dull and wilted as they become as days in the heat stack up.
