The Peralta Trail in the Tonto National Forest climbs over numerous rocks and though the desert, but it also crosses some small streams which small pockets of foliage not otherwise seen in this dry climate.

Canyon Lake Sunset

As I mentioned in the post from earlier this week Highway 88 provides numerous observation points as it winds its way through the desert mountains. One of these spots lies just past the West Canyon Lake Marina. You can pull over, park your vehicle and a short but steep climb will bring you to a plateau on the ridgeline overlooking Canyon Lake. I spent about four hours at this spot and was able to capture a wide variety of photos ranging from sunset to starlight.

Superstition Flowers

It’s been a rainy past couple days here in Phoenix so yesterday I headed back out to the Superstition mountains to see if I could find some flowers to shoot against the mountains. The last time I had been out this way the National Park Service had closed all the trails due to a looming wildfire so it was nice to get closer to the mountain this time.

Lynx Lake

Another photo from my trip to Lynx Lake in Prescott. The trail hugs the shoreline closely for 90 percent of the hike and brings you many of these small coves where reeds or fallen trees sit at the waterline.

Trailside

In the past couple of months, I’ve spent more time out in the Tonto National Forest than I have in the eight years since I moved here in 2012. There is such a rich variety of images to capture not only here but throughout Arizona that it is a destination for many photographers. This shot was taken, as the title suggests, trailside. I saw these two cactus’ that were so similar in shape and size I began to think of them as twins and they just naturally lined up with a peak in the background.

The Trees

It’s not that we don’t have trees in Phoenix. We do….many different kinds in fact, but in general, they are used as decoration in outdoor malls or lining our streets. To go out and stand in a forest, however, you generally need to get out of Phoenix, which is what I did a couple of weeks ago on a trip to Prescott. While there I visited and hiked the Lynx Lake trail for the first time. The hike itself is a very easy 3.3 mile loop but provides complete immersion in the woods beside the lake and that is where the trees in this shot were found. The cooler temps that day mixed with the surrounding forest definitely reminded me of wooded areas back home in Wisconsin and the silence, aside from meeting the occasional fellow hiker, was a great reprieve from the noise of the city and the chaotic assault of sounds that come with working in the ER.

Marcos De Niza Trail

A friend and I decided to find a less-traveled trail of the offerings on South Mountain. The Marcos De Niza Trail starts at the trailhead off of 48th street, climbs quickly and runs along the ridgeline on South Mountain until meeting up with the National Trail. This picture was taken at the terminal point of our hike but the trail continues on for another 1.5miles before meeting the National Trail at the Buena Vista overlook. The day also highlighted the challenge that is dressing for hikes in Arizona during the winter months. The temperature dropped from near 80 at the start to mid 50’s by the time we made it back to the car.

Desert Stream

Rivers and streams do cross through the desert here in Arizona. Sometimes big, sometimes small, sometimes dependent on the amount of rainfall we’ve had recently…..but always seeming to stand in stark contrast to the dry and cracked landscape they cross.

Echo Canyon

Camelback Mountain is arguably the most iconic peak in Phoenix offering an arduous hike on the way up and amazing views from the top. The mountain offers two trails to the top with the Echo Canyon trail being the more challenging of the two. This photo was taken about halfway up during one of the few respites from the 5-41% grade you will encounter on your way up.

Lost Dutchman Trail

A friend of mine wanted to start the New Year off on a good foot by being out in nature so on New Years Day we headed out to Lost Dutchman State Park to do some hiking. We weren’t able to hike the entire trail but the time out there was well spent and very peaceful. If you’re thinking to yourself that the desert sure looks pretty green for being…well…a desert it’s due to the numerous days of rain we had over the holidays.

Superstition Road

As fate would have it a friend of mine from my days at Lutherdale was out here this week and we were able to meet up and spend some time together. She agreed to show me a spot she had taken some photos earlier in the week and it did not disappoint.

The rain and storms that had followed the Christmas Holiday were moving on toward the east and we arrived just in time to capture the sunset as it ducked under the clouds and illuminated the Superstition Mountains.

Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport quite literally sits in the middle of Phoenix offering unusually spectacular views of landing and departing to aircraft to the surrounding community. Approximately 1200 flights and 120,000 passengers arrive and depart every day. Driving to the top of the parking garage gives an unfettered view of the tarmac below and the mountains (some close, some far) that surround Phoenix.

Lazy Afternoons

The phrase “we’re really hoping for valley fever” is not one we figured we’d be saying around here. We’ve had a worrisome couple weeks with this guy. We noticed that he seemed to be favoring his left hind leg and would whimper or cry when playing with his brother. The initial trip to the doctor left us with a few possibilities including valley fever, hip dysplasia or some sort of cancer. Well, the valley fever tests came back negative. A followup exam seems to point to more of a musculoskeletal issue than anything more serious so while there are still questions to be answered we can breathe a sigh of relief for now.

Cactus Sunset

There is a trail at the end of 19th Ave. that climbs up the north side of south mountain. It climbs to the ridge line and then traverses across the top. The view on the way up just gets better and better providing endless opportunities for capturing photos of the mountains surrounding and the city below. All this being said, the hike is not for the faint of heart……..or for those who are much more familiar with binge watching Friends on Netflix then conquering grades averaging 30-40 degrees while hauling 20-30lbs of photography gear. #timetogetoffthecouch #ineedtohikemore

Tempe Bridges

I hope this finds everyone rested up thanks to…and perhaps from the Thanksgiving holiday. After a crazy run of days between jury duty and working, I am enjoying several days off myself. I decided to run over to Tempe Town lake yesterday as I figured it might be a little less crowded than usual and I wasn’t disappointed.

As a side note, I’m always thinking of different ways to present the photos I take. This past year I’ve worked under the timeline of posting one photo per week…..or at least one primary photo per week. Occasionally I’ve had a set of photos and have either posted them as a group or posted one photo and then added the others to the gallery on my website. I am always working to find the balance between posting photos…..and trying not to be the friend that is constantly posting new content and/or asking you to check out items for sale. There is a fine line between keeping you intrigued or leaving you annoyed…. and I’m trying to walk it. So I’m going to start trying something new. If I end up with a series of photos in a shoot I will post a primary photo to FB and Instagram, as most of my traffic is to this account, and any subsequent photos may be posted to Instagram throughout the week What do you think?
