For the past couple week’s I have been itching to get out and see some fall colors. I debated on taking a trip to Washington or Colorado. In the end I decided to focus my attention on a part of Arizona that I’ve driven through a few times but have never stopped in, that being Flagstaff. In particular I was curious to check out Lockett Meadow which I’ve heard amazing things about. Last Monday I finally had the chance to go check it out and it certainly did not disappoint. Lockett Meadow is a mix of rustic camping sites and parking for day adventurers looking for a picnic or hike. The Inner Basin Trail head can be found here and, after gawking at the incredible views, is where I decided to spend my time. The trail provides a sometimes gradual, sometimes not so gradual uphill grade that evens out to switchbacks the latter part of the hike. Unbeknown to me at the time, what you are hiking up is actually the sides of an ancient volcano long since dormant which erupted and formed the San Francisco Peaks. While I I 100% recommend this area and this hike to anyone wanting to get out of Phoenix and out into nature, particularly this time of year when the colors are spectacular, there are a couple things to keep in mind. The last 3 miles of the drive are definitely off-road and while I saw very average passenger cars making the trip don’t expect to bring a trailer up with you…the road is too rough and in some sections barely wide enough to allow two cars to pass each other. Parking at the meadow is pretty good but I would definitely recommend car-pooling to limit the number of vehicles you would have to find spots for. Finally, make sure you bring enough water for your adventure as there are no drinkable water sources on them mountain.
